Write your own error messages

Every validation error a shopper can hit is now yours to word, in your brand's voice and your shoppers' language. Set them once for the whole form, fine-tune any field, and preview them on the canvas before you publish.

"Invalid format" is accurate, but it isn't how your brand talks, and if your store sells in French, German or Japanese, it isn't even in your shoppers' language. Now every error a shopper can see can say what you want it to say, in the language your form is written in.

Set them once for the whole form

Open Form settings → Error messages to write a default for every field on the form at once. Set When left empty or Invalid email address here and every field that can show that error uses your wording, so translating a form's errors takes one pass instead of a trip through every field.

The list only shows errors that some field on your form can actually show, and it grows as you add fields and rules.

Selection-limit and date-range messages can include each field's own limit. Write {min} or {max}, as in "Select at least {min} options", and a question that needs two answers shows "Select at least 2 options" while one that needs three shows "3".

Give a question its own words

Two errors usually depend on the question, so a field can word them itself. Select the field and open its Error messages section, below Field Properties:

  • When left empty, on a required field: "We need your email to send your code"
  • Does not match the pattern or Outside suggested options, on a field with a validation pattern or allowed answers: "Enter a 5-digit ZIP code"

A field's own message wins over the form's. Each box shows what the field would say if you left it blank, so you always know what you're replacing, and Edit form defaults takes you to the form-wide list.

Messages can be up to 300 characters of plain text. If you write HTML, shoppers see it exactly as typed.

See it before shoppers do

Click Preview error under a field's message to show it beneath the field on the canvas, right where shoppers will see it. Click Hide error to dismiss it. Previewing doesn't touch your answers or saved form data.

Luigi can do it for you

Ask Luigi to "translate the error messages into Italian" or "make the errors friendlier" and it updates the form defaults for you, alongside the rest of the form's text.

Your existing messages carry over

If you'd already written a required or pattern message on a field, it shows up in that field's section unchanged. Changing the wording never changes which answers a field accepts, and new messages go live the next time you publish.
